With ATM and Debit Card Fraud showing no signs of slowing down, consumers must strive to be more and more vigilant about their safety and card security. While fraud cannot be 100% avoided, there are a few steps that can be taken to make yourself less vulnerable.
1. Be Alert
Always be aware of your surroundings when approaching and using an ATM. Avoid ATMs that are not well-lit or are in a desolate area. Trust your gut, if something seems suspicious, do not use the machine.
2. Be Ready
Whether in your vehicle or on foot, have everything ready before you get to the ATM. Fumbling through your purse, wallet, or car can make you an easy target for criminals. Be sure that all passenger doors and windows are locked while you complete your transaction.
3. Watch For Skimmers
The best way to avoid skimmers (devices criminals install on the card reader to capture your card information) is to use ATM’s that you are familiar with. To inspect the ATM, you will need to know what it normally looks like. Then, check for unusual graphics, non-functioning lights, or parts that look out of place. If you have any doubt, do not use the ATM and contact the financial institution.
4. Hide Your Pin
If the ATM is in a public location, do your best to protect your pin number from onlookers. If someone is watching you and you feel uncomfortable, cancel the transaction and leave the ATM.
5. Take All Receipts
Be sure to take your receipt after you complete the transaction. Even if you do not need it, take it with you and shred it as this contains sensitive information that could be utilized by criminals.
